Law and Ethics: An overview of law for mental health professionals (6 CEs) Helping mental health professionals understand how to operate within the complex legal environment. Health care professionals practice in an environment that is complex, with many regulations, laws and standards of practice. Health care practitioners of all sorts face the risk of being sued for malpractice. It is incumbent upon practitioners to know the professional boundaries to engage in ethical decision-making, which minimizes risk and increases efficacy in the helping professions.    This course is meant to expose attendees to the ways in which social work, counseling, and psychology intersect with the law. We present basic legal concepts, describe the workings of the court system, and share strategies for avoiding malpractice. In this course, we will cover the following topic areas: Understand how mental health workers can operate within the legal environment Explore how competent practice can influence legal processes and outcomes Examine how law and the social work, counseling, and psychology codes of ethics intersect in relation to particular populations and these respective fields of practice Discuss why legal decisions might differ from social work, counseling and psychology decision-making Distinguish between case law and statutory law and understand the role of each This live, face-to-face course is for 6 CEs. One CE contact hour is equal to 60 minutes of a learning activity. Attendees must participate in all sessions for which they registered and complete a course evaluation.  CE certificates will be issued on the same day and at the end of the class.  This course is targeted, but not limted, to the following: new graduates (BSW or MSW) or individuals who have recently changed fields of practice; individuals with a year or more experience in the relevant field of practice; and individuals with several years of experience in related work.
