The S.A.F.E. Food Pantry invites you to our free quarterly Food for Thought information session with special topic “Food Allergies and Lower School: 3 Steps to Create a Safe School Environment For Your Kids” on Thursday, September 19 from 7-8:30PM in the Warfield Room of the Central Branch of the Howard County Library in Columbia, MD. The agenda for Food for Thought on Thursday, September 19: 7:00-7:15PM - Overview of the S.A.F.E. Food Pantry 7:15-8:15PM - Education Session: “Food Allergies and Lower School: 3 Steps to Create a Safe School Environment For Your Kids” 8:15-8:30PM - Optional: Q&A and Open Discussion Dr. DeCosta will present the following: “Food Allergies and Lower School: 3 Steps to Create a Safe School Environment For Your Kids.” In this presentation, you will discover: 3 key steps to help your child to have a safer and more successful school year. Important information regarding medication and the essential form your doctor should complete. 5 staff members to speak with at your child’s school. Topics to discuss with your child’s teacher, including a helpful handout to share. Necessary conversations to have with your child, along with some tools, tips and tactics to help them understand important 'stay safe' concepts. Each Food for Thought session features a new educational component, so you can join us each quarter to learn more. RSVP today to make sure your seat is saved! Please note that this is not a fundraising event, so we will not be asking for donations. About the speaker… Dr. Donna DeCosta is an author and the founder of the Food Allergy and Sensitivity Circle, Food ASC, a multi-author blog, community and online resource directory designed to support families with food allergies and sensitivities. She also founded the Food Allergy Moms Circle, an online membership program to help moms of children with food allergies in preschool and elementary school to reduce their anxiety. The Moms Circle teaches moms to provide their kids the right tools and knowledge to start to safely and confidently manage their food allergies in an age-appropriate manner. Donna is the published author of A Little Bit CAN Hurt: The Shocking Truth About Food Allergies--Why We Should Care, What We Can Do. Donna is the founder and facilitator of Supporting Allergic Families through Education (SAFE), a local support group involved in food allergy education and networking, recognized by Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE). In 2010, Dr. DeCosta blogged at FoodAllergyMomDoc to support the “Food Allergy Circle”. In 2016, she expanded this community to include people with celiac disease and other dietary intolerances and founded The Food Allergy and Sensitivity Circle (FoodASC.com). Dr. DeCosta has a BS from Cornell University, an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and post-graduate training from Howard University School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System. Her practice includes diagnostic radiology. She is a Maryland resident, the married mother of two sons who have multiple life-threatening food allergies, and has been a food allergy advocate for the past 19 years.
