Abdul Hamid II Exhibition Lecture
Gift exchange has a history as long as humanity. A collection of books and serials presented by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul-Hamid II were sent to the U.S. Library of Congress in 1884 as a gift. Why Sultran sent such a remarkable gift collection to the Library Congress? Yunus Emre Institute is delighted to host the exhibition lecture “Off the shelves and into the cloud: Connecting to the Abdul-Hamid II Collection of Books and Serials Gifted to the Library of Congress” The exhibition lecture will take you to explore the story of the most unique and unusual gifts that the Library of Congress has received on April 19th, 2019 at our institution. We are honored to invite our speaker: Joan S. Weeks, Head & Turkish Specialist at the Library of Congress. Joan holds a MA in Education, as well as a MA in International Relations with a Middle East and Turkish studies specialization and an MLIS in Library and Information Science. Joan was a Sr. Technical Processing and Automation Instructor where she designed and taught courses on the Library computer systems to staff and managed the migration of the website to the new format. Outside the Library, Joan has taught at the Catholic University School of Library and Information Science, as an adjunct faculty member. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkey.
