2019 Maryland Financial Education Summit

Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 3:30 PM

Please join financial education practitioners, researchers and stakeholders to consider how we can help Maryland adults gain the skills and confidence to meet their financial goals. This Summit is designed to allow educators to share their best teaching tools, methods and curriculum with the group. We bring together up-to-date research, best practices, and the insights and expertise of our state’s financial education leaders. Via interactive presentations, plenary sessions and small workshops we will consider these key questions: What would it take to provide high quality, engaging financial education for adults in Maryland? What would it take for financial education to lead to better outcomes for participants? Who should attend, Financial educators, organizations and stakeholders who want to promote high quality financial programs. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Parking is free. Below is a list of some of the workshops that will be at this year's Summit! Key Note Speaker, Nationally Renowned Brunch & Budget; Financial Literacy is Dead - It’s Time to Teach Financial Resilience The systems that drive our finances are designed to take advantage of those with the least and these systems thrive on us staying in the dark and blaming ourselves when things go wrong. It’s time for us to move away from teaching financial literacy solely from a personal responsibility standpoint and instead show people how to become financially resilient through understanding how their personal finances connect to their communities and the larger economy. What if instead of just teaching someone how to open a bank account, we also taught them how banks make money? What if instead of just putting people on a budget, we asked them to first examine how advertisers convince us to buy things we don’t need? What if instead of starting with smart goals and spreadsheets, we started with understanding their relationship with money? Let’s give people the ability to truly know how to advocate for themselves, find opportunities, and feel empowered about their money. Let’s change the way finance is taught. Plenary and Workshop Topics will include; ABC's of Financial Education, Advocacy Updates, Behavioral Economics, Cybersecurity and Small Businesses. This event is an AFCPE approved program granting 2.5 hours upon completion. Registration is limited to the first 200 applicants so register today! Door Prizes will be available for participants to win at the end of the event including a fully comped 2019 Common Cents Conference Registration!
